"Si può?" (Oh yeah, SI PUÒ!) How to manifest Pagliacci's Prologo pt. 1/2 + 2/2

"Si può?" (Oh yeah, SI PUÒ!) How to manifest Pagliacci's Prologo pt. 1/2 + 2/2

For a few years already, the young and daring Milanese publisher Edoardo Sonzogno had been renting the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and the Dal Verme in Milan, as well as calling for new operatic scores in yearly contemporary music competitions (then hosting their premieres, taking on huge risks), in order, on the one hand , not to leave the monopoly to Casa Ricordi, and, on the other, to renew Italian Opera. One of the composers that partook such competitions was the 35yo Ruggero Leoncavallo, that, speaking in third person through the character of Tonio, who introduces the play as its prologue, also foreseeing its end, well declares - in tritones and semitones of insane harmonic refinement - how the Viennese school is just around the corner. An epic coaching: "Si può?"- F*CK YEAH: SI PUÒ!!! Let me walk you through this masterpiece, between newborns to be held 🐥 and towels to be pulled from underneath🥛🍽️ without disturbing, dropping or cracking anything. An amazing professional baritone, at his first attempt ever at this aria and at its A flat, which he feared, hence avoided, or pushed and cracked, then caressed and gained in ONE session (technically, in about 15 minutes from the first false attempt to the final result). It took me twenty years of profession to find all the words, all the possible metaphors that can lead you to the result you're looking for; twenty years that built the indispensable calm, patience, and that total lack of judgement which can only be supported by the feeling of absolute CERTAINTY that I CAN make you do it, do what YOU want, do what I know you want and know you CAN do. Body language never lies and I believe that raising one's fist ✊ stands for POWER. The power TO. Empowering you makes me high. 🏔️ Sincerely yours, without any false modesty best in the effin' world 🌎 Maestra ⚡ Sara Gamarro, Italian Opera coach www.cantareitaliano.org ⏺️ Ps: the diction recording of the aria is on The Cantare Italiano ARKive (playlist"Bass & Baritone") - on my website #sipuò #pagliacci #leoncavallo #ilprologo #pagliacciprologo #tonio #ruggeroleoncavallo #edoardosonzogno #saragamarro #cantareitaliano #belcanto #opera #italiandiction #italianopera #singing #diction #spell #voice #contemporarymusic #operasingersofinstagram #singing #aria #voiceteacher #vocalcoach #contemporarymusic #vienneseschool #teatrocostanzi #teatrodalverme

Stradella-Sciarrino's "LOVE & FURY": whips of pain and desire

Sara Gamarro, Italian Opera coach https://www.cantareitaliano.org Mine for #SalvatoreSciarrino wasn't love a first sight, but with this last work of his he conquered and consoled the "fede" of my heart - as per the lyrics' indications. The nine orchestral arias that his #LoveAndFury (2023) is made of are re-elaborated works by the Italian baroque composer #AlessandroStradella. They paint love and eroticism in all its possible nuances - from the most spiritual to the most vivid technicisms of love - and through a leading of the vocal line that embraces, mirrors and reproposes the Italian "loving" ways from #Pergolesi to #LuigiNono. I had lots of fun. La Maestra ⚡😏❣️ PS 1: Find the diction recordings of the lyrics of Love and Fury in The Cantare Italiano ARKive (https://www.cantareitaliano.org/arkive) PS 2: for the best possible fruition of the coaching, in occasion of the premiere of the piece, I've made a pdf brochure with both the Italian originals and the English translations of: - Sciarrino's preface (really worth reading); - the lyrics of all nine songs the piece consists in.

"Senza mamma": a Puccinian modern, F major mad scene

"Senza mamma": a Puccinian modern, F major mad scene

When I was 17, I came back from school to find that my very own mother, who is a nice lady and together the most effective rendition of the Zia Principessa I've ever met in real life - without the slightest sense of guilt, had disposed of my 4 year old cat, Minou, claiming that I wasn't good at keeping her. I got notice: my baby was no longer there, period. The Zia Principessa had given her away, to a friend of hers who lived in the countryside, to be kept like a wild cat, and, already the next day, when I obtained from my dad that she was given back to me, she was no longer anywhere to be found. To this day I think of Minou and ask for her forgiveness, and think of how nice it will be when we'll be reunited and all will be settled. This story is the only way I can render, to myself, at least, the idea of what #SenzaMamma means, of how modern Puccinian characters are, of how someone can be a respectable mother and a Zia Principessa at the same time, of how a deeply spiritual creature Angelica is, of how it takes the Mother of all mothers to make up for all mothers who had no idea what their job was. Whatever. Maestro Spinelloccio: la scuola bolognese (diction tutorial)

Maestro Spinelloccio: la scuola bolognese (diction tutorial)

Sara Gamarro, Italian Opera coach www.cantareitaliano.org You can no longer call it an operatic work: Gianni Schicchi is a movie, although without the film or the camera. In TWO measures, and just by the way the three entrance words of Maestro Spinelloccio are split, Puccini gets to give us four MAJOR dramaturgy indications: 1. Maestro Spinelloccio is no longer young, hence he's not a neophyte of medicine; 2. he's not slim, hence not poor; 3. he likely came to Florence all the way from Bologna (called "la dotta", because of the University and "la grassa" - "the fat one", because of the good food) purposedly to visit (the already dead) Messer Buoso, hence Buoso could afford such privileges from the best of doctors; 4. he's panting of exhaustion after climbing the huge ramps of stairs that in 1299 could be found only in noble palaces: once more the wealth of Buoso is underlined, to the avail of better setting the scene for the fraud. If Puccini in 1918 brought all the way to the Met in NYC these insanely juicy details and lifelike cameos (to the extent that some of them were historic characters, too: I already spoke about how he features Guccio Gucci as one of the notary's witnesses, the "tintore", in the same work - check out the stories) it must have been for a reason. Anyways, I myself studied in Bologna (Singing and, most importantly, Composition) and I can really confirm: "Il merito l'è tutto della scuola bolognese": for at the times of Padre Martini, musician to whom the Conservatory of the city - my, Conservatory - is entitled, Bologna was already well reknowed as a capital for musical studies: harmony and counterpoint in particular, so much that Mozart himself was Martini's student, at some point. It's worth noticing how in Bologna you can also find, still nowadays, the state of the art of modern western Medicine. La Forza of your Destino: how to give a Don Alvaro his ageless voice back

La Forza of your Destino: how to give a Don Alvaro his ageless voice back

Sara Gamarro, Italian Opera coach www.cantareitaliano.org Life may sometimes even take the man out of the tenor - IF, we let her - but in no case it could EVER take the tenor out of the man. One of my most powerful fuels in life was anger. The way entire generations of singers have been betrayed and put down by self called voice teachers - that were not, under ANY point of view, either professional or professionalS all together (as proven not only by the lack of results, but also by the fact that they never left a physical trace of the large amounts of money they received for decades), used to anger me, and fill me with disdain. Now, that anger has become my power. No: my SUPER, power. If you come to me thinking that you can sing Don Alvaro, it's my pleasure, and DUTY, to take you there. Because, you know - I CAN. The fact that such a talent (and properly cultivated!) did not make it to a professional career in his youth, used to anger me. But no need to be angry, now that we're powerful, together. Now that we can fulfil the destiny of our vocation - together. I honor, respect, cherish, thank, but most importantly deeply LOVE students such as this one here. You're my heroes, and I'll be yours. Welcome aboard. Vissi d'Arte: Tosca as a working woman and a falcon between realms

Vissi d'Arte: Tosca as a working woman and a falcon between realms

January 14th, 1900: with Floria Tosca, professional singer, the XXth century woman is born. Modern women wear trousers, go to work, and are remunerated - yet in a VERY unfair way, she says, and that is true to nowadays. "Vissi d'arte" is definitely a song, a jazz standard, but also an angrly sobbing prayer that goes crescendo towards ONE question - PERCHÉ? - as well as a statement in itself: "I fed myself through art" (not through marriage, prostitution or imposed religious vows). So yes, "Tosca è un buon falco", but not only because she's used by Scarpia to spot Angelotti's hiding place: because she's a night predator with a fierce call, who sings for her dinner and provides for her needs; because like all birds she connects realms of all kinds, flying amongst them: the harmonic ones: merging Gregorian music with jazz, the geographic ones, merging East with West, the rhythmic ones, merging the 2 with the 3, the spiritual ones, merging holy and profane, the historic ones, merging past and future, the gender ones, merging male and female (even the name Mario is the masculine of Maria, the Madonna she's so devoted to). Do NOT miss the full version of this session soon on YouTube (link to my channel in bio) and find the diction recording of Vissi d'Arte in The Cantare Italiano ARKive (also in bio) La Maestra ⚡ Sara Gamarro, Italian Opera coach #puccini #tosca #vissidarte #cavaradossi #scarpia #soprano #aria #song #saragamarro #cantareitaliano #thecantareitalianoarkive #belcanto #opera #italiandiction #italianopera #singing #diction #spell #voice #talent #operasingersofinstagram #singing #aria #voiceteacher #vocalcoach #remuneration #modernity #women #1900 #gender #freud
